The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Government of India, launched the a centrally funded scheme “National Beekeeping and Honey Mission (NBHM)” during 2019-20.

It has been started for the overall promotion and development of scientific beekeeping and to achieve the goal of “Sweet Revolution”.The NBHM is implemented through the National Bee Board for overall promotion of scientific beekeeping & entrepreneurship among small & marginal farmers, infrastructure development for postharvest management and support for research & development.

Scope of activities

Capacity building & trainings, specific focus on women, input support for promotion & production, setting up of Integrated Beekeeping Development Centres (IBDCs), other Infrastructures, Digitization /online registration, etc., processing, value addition, market support, etc. & R&D being taken up under 3 Mini Missions (MMs)-MM-1, MM-2 & MM-3. 

Beneficiaries

  •  Individual beneficiaries/ Societies/ Firms / Companies
  • Self Help Groups (SHGs)/ Joint Liability Groups (JLGs)/ Farmers/ Beekeepers Interested Groups (FIGs)/ Co-operatives/ FPOs/ FPCs/ Member Beekeepers’ Federations (MBFs) of NBB/ MBFs registered with NBB
  • National/ State level Governmental Organizations, including NBB, ICAR, State Agricultural Universities (SAUs)/ Central Agricultural Universities (CAUs), etc

Madhkendra (Beekeeping) scheme

Benefits :- Training, supply of materials required for the beekeeping business, beehives, bee machines.
Methodology :- by the Beekeeping Scheme is being implemented by Maharashtra State Khadi and Village Industries Board and for this, a Honey Directorate is functioning at Mahabaleshwar. Training of beneficiaries, distribution of beehives along with beehives and other materials, collecting honey, processing and selling it, etc. are carried out through this Directorate. Also, the board has district offices at the district level and the Maharashtra State Khadi and Village Industries Board will work as an implementing mechanism to implement the proposed scheme.

Madhkendra (Beekeeping) Scheme:- To raise the standard of living of the beneficiaries from all the sectors of the state by helping them to increase their income from the beekeeping business and to create infrastructure for the development of the honey industry, increase their quality etc. Keeping in view the requirements of the matter and considering the favorable environment for the development of the honey industry in the state, the following objectives are followed. To create beekeepers who are engaged in the business of the honey industry on a commercial basis.

Organizing awareness camp (gatherings):- Public awareness camps (meetings) will be organized at the taluka level or by grouping villages in central places to promote and popularize the beekeeping industry. 1 to 2 meetings will be organized in each district. The gathering will be for 1 day. There will be 50 farmers and beekeepers in a gathering.

Beekeeping Business Special Training:- Farmers, school college students, senior citizens, government service officers/employees demand training to start beekeeping. They will be given 5 days term training under this scheme.

  • Major Components of the Scheme :-
    (a) Selection of Beekeeper Beneficiaries
    Individual Beekeeper Eligibility Conditions –
  • Should be literate.
  • Having your own farm is preferred.
  • Having your own farm is preferred.
  • Must be above 18 years of age.
  • It will be mandatory for the applicant to undergo 10 days’ training in a training center recognized by the Board.
  • (b) Progressive Beekeepers:-
    Eligibility Criteria for Personal Center Manager:-
  • Must have at least the 10th pass.
  • Should be above 21 years of age.
  • Names of such persons or names of any persons in the family of such persons You must have at least one acre of agricultural land or farm land acquired on a lease basis.
  • Training people on beekeeping, breeding and honey production at the beneficiaries There should be capacity and facility to give
  • It will be mandatory for the applicant to undergo 10 days’ training in a training center recognized by the Board.
  • Institution Eligibility Criteria:-
  • Organization should be registered.
  • At least 1 acre of agricultural land should be owned or leased for ten years in the name of the organization.
  • There should be a suitable building of at least 500 sq.ft in the name of the organization or on rent for running the training centre.
  • To impart training in beekeeping, breeding and honey production to the institute There should be capable servants. (Beneficial bee-friendly flora in the honey industry area Beneficiaries will be selected from areas having vegetation, agricultural crops and fruit trees.
  • (c) Training the selected individual/employee of the organization:-
  • 1. Beekeeping Training:- The beekeeper will be given 10 days’ residential training through the Directorate of Honey or through such institution/person as may be decided by the Directorate.
  • 2. Advanced beekeeping training20 days of residential training will be given to progressive beekeepers or members/employees of the organization at Directorate of Honey, Mahabaleshwar.
  • Form of financial assistance and grant –
    50 percent of the amount in the form of grant and 50 percent of the amount in the form of loan as the beneficiary’s share.
